I really don't see what people are so excited about. Like another reviewer has said, the pizza is ok. Not great, not bad. Very 'merican. One thing to note is that the pizza is quite different from the Barnaby's in Chicagoland, where the crusts are noticeably thinner and the sauces are a little drier. Also, they have different toppings, including garlic and the all-mighty bacon, which I think would greatly have improved the pizza.

    Delicious pizza, loved the crust!!!

I phoned in an order to carry-out a large pizza. I was told it would be 25-30 minutes. When I arrived, the place was very busy. It took an additional 20-25 minutes to get my pizza. When I got home, the pizza was basically burnt. The cheese was very brown, the outer crust was such that I gave it to my dog because it was the same consistency of a Milk Bone. The bottom crust was very chewy. I've had their pizza before thus my order this day. But it will be a few months before (if?) I try them again. I was quite disappointed.

I read a decent amount of the reviews before going here and heard my friends repeatedly hype up Barnaby's. I must say I can't agree with the people who say this pizza is to die for, but I also don't hate it. It's pretty reasonably priced, they have some decent beers on tap, and they lay their toppings on thick...really thick. They also have various sandwiches I want to try for very reasonably prices (beef sandwich for ~$3.50). One more thing, the atmosphere inside is pretty.....different. It's really dark, and seating is first come first serve seat yourself. All in all, a decent place I wouldn't mind going back to, but not first on my list the next time I'm going out to eat.

Delicious pizza. Maybe the best I've ever had. For 2 of us I ordered a 10" pizza and it was just the right size. Sausage, pepperoni, green pepper, onion & mushroom. Took about 20 minutes to cook. While we waited we enjoyed a couple tap beers. I recommend ordering beer by the pitcher even if there are just 2 in your party, because it is a much better deal.

Pizza is excellent. Nuf said. But here's more to say. Crust is crisp and not bready (not soft, like a dinner roll, as pizza is in many places, so you don't feel you are eating a bread stick with some stuff on top--Dominos deep dish pizza I got last week was like that, alas). They appear to cook the pizza a minute longer than some other places and so it's crisper and crunchier, yet still "juicy" if one can describe that on a pizza--which is good, as some mouth-feel is what a pizza should have, and this has it! Even a reheated pizza the next day or two is pretty good. Sausage and spices and veggies and pepperoni are each good. Been eating these for many, many years. My firm often got 6 or 8 of these pizzas to provide lunch to people from around the country who were in for meetings, and the pizzas got raves as they got devoured. South Bend location is the spot, it's not the same quality in the Mishawaka location. Btw, hamburgers are also good. I have no personal or financial interest in any review I provide.

Pizza gets five stars....sandwiches are a one. Cold meatballs, untoasted bread, plastic in the Italian sub....I have always loved the pizza and will continue to order it, but I will never get a sandwich here again..

I've lived in this neighborhood for many years, and I was looking forward to a new experience when this restaurant closed for remodeling a couple months ago. Unfortunately I was disappointed when I went today. The same boring dull ceilings and walls and very uncomfortable booths. The food was OK, but all in all there's not enough here to bring me back.

Barnabys is my go to pizza spot in South Bend. If you are looking for wood oven pizza with interesting toppings or thick deep dish style pizza, barnabys isn't for you. What they do have is classic American toppings (sausage, peperoni, and veggies) and a crispy/chewy not too thick crust with an interesting biscuit/yeasty type flavor. The sausage is slightly spicy and they don't skimp on anything they put on their pizza. The service is different than what you would be used to in most pizza places, but their system really works. You order at the register, pay for your meal and then get a ticket for your food. Then you move over to a bar area and grab your sodas or beer. You are in charge of grabbing all your plates, silverware, and everything else for yourself. It's never a long wait even when they are packed and you dont have to worry about a server giving you bad service. If you get bad service, it's your own fault. The only thing I don't like about barnabys is their weak beer and wine selection. They have fat tire, Newcastle, macro brews, and some crappy house wine. Add a few regional craft brews and a decent bottle of red wine and this place would be perfect.

They had a terrible night! We called in our order and were told it would be ready in 30 minutes. Wrong! After 1 hour our order was "ready". Great, except we were missing one of the pizzas we ordered. We were told we could wait, or get a coupon for a free pizza. We opted for the coupon. ANOTHER problem. The cashier refused to honor giving us the coupon since "she wasn't told about it". At this point we just wanted to get out of the place. VERY disappointing! After all of that, the pizza we DID get was over -baked. SERIOUSLY?!?!

New to the area and we heard good things about this place. As a newbie, you walk in and there is no one to greet you, which is fine, but we just kind of stood there looking around trying to figure out what to do and no one came up to us and asked if we'd been helped, etc. The process isn't self explanatory (order food on one side, drinks on the other, then sit down), so a sign or friendly staff would have been nice. Maybe we missed it or maybe it was an off night for everyone, but the food has no excuse. We ordered a pepperoni thin crust. I was not impressed with the pizza quality. The meat, sauce and cheese were good, but the crust was terrible. Not crispy and had a raw, flour like taste to it. I mean how do you own an established pizza joint that serves floury, bland crust? Seems like pizza blasphemy to me. If this is their crust it won't matter what pizza you order because the taste will be the same. A little disappointed because the atmosphere of this place is very cool.

It's so dark in there man. The pizza was a 7/10 but the lights left a lot to be desired. I couldn't see anything the whole time. I felt like Stevie Wonder when I was in that place. Sometimes I tried to reach for my cup full of fruit punch and ended up grabbing some fries from my fry basket instead. That is really annoying because I need to drink something when I am thirsty not eat a food like fries that just make me more parched. It took me about 2 hours and 45 minutes to finish my meal because of the darkness. I would say this place is more of a $$$$ joint than a $$ joint. If you are going to drop a few bucks on a pizza here then you might as well go out and buy some nightvision goggles. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and gave the joint 4 stars. Maybe the lights were just not working that day. I understand that electricians are in hot demand these days so the problem is understandable. Definitely going to hit up a sbarro next time instead.

This is an interesting place. Based off of the reviews we were hoping to find our new go to pizza place while we lived in the area but sadly that didn't turn out. When you walk in the place is completely windowless and there are mainly two person booth tables. Instead of a waiter you order at the front and pick it up there as well. The pizza was decent but not anything to write home about.

Best pizza in South Bend. Supreme is the best. You order at the window and they will call your number. Seperate bar area to order your drinks. Great for delivery! Seating is first come and it can fill up quickly.

I was in south bend for the first time on business and wanted to try some pizza for dinner. This place had pretty good reviews on yelp, so I decided to give it a try. I have need been to a pizza place quite like this before. The other reviews prepared me for the mideval ambiance, but not the flow of the place. First you see a big counter and you go and fill out a paper ticket for your good one for any sides and another for the pizza. Then they call your number when your order is ready and you seat yourself. From what I could tell the only way to get any beverage was to go to the bar and order your beverage separately. Which, was a by perturbing since I'm on business and have to fill out ppw and submit all receipts for meals. They made up for the inconvenience by having hard cider at the bar in a fairly small establishment. The pizza was delish! I very much enjoyed eating it. The breadsticks I ordered looked like they were extra deep fried in the outside. They looked similar to a corn dog without a stick or a dog, but they tasted way better than they looked. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to bus my own table or not, but I saw a fellow cleaning off tables so I let him do it. I didn't realize that this place was a sort of chipotle style eatery only for pizza. I was expecting sit down tables. The method looks great for take out and I liked the pizza. It was very similar to the pizza I would get in my very small hometown in rural IL.

I am mixing 2 visits into 1. First is for the pizza. It is by far my favorite in South Bend. I have never had one I didn't like. Second visit is for the Italian beef. This wasn't very good. Tough, chewy and not much flavor. Cole slaw is very good here. I believe it is made in house So if I combine the 2 visits I still come up with 5 stars. Pizza is that good and that consistent for me to give them that.

If you got into the time machine and punched up 1972 + pizza you might end up here. It reminds me of a Shakey's Pizza in Speedway from that time, complete with dark wood, lighting, and pitchers of beer. The only thing missing is the piano player and five or six hippies. I first encountered Barnaby's when I lived in South Bend 25 years ago and I take my sons there after ballgames. If you are a child of the 60s & 70s you'll dig the atmosphere but the pizza is also great with a crunchy crust. I also like that you can get small cups of parmesan cheese and hot pepper flakes.

How disappointing! I am a long time Barnaby's customer in Illinois. I travel to South Bend a few times a year and was thrilled to find two Barnaby's locations. Last time I was here I tried the Grape rd. Location in Mishawaka. Yummmm yummm yummm! The crust was thin and crispy and the sauce and toppings were perfect. I read the reviews online and saw the high praise for this location and thought I needed to try it on this trip... What a disappointment! YUCK! The mushrooms were chopped into little pieces of nothingness. I could barely identify them. I asked for fresh garlic and got WHOLE CLOVES throughout the pizza! The biggest offense was the thick, doughy crust. What a shame! You forgot how to make Barnaby's pizza... Visit Mishawaka or Northbrook, IL for the right way to make a proper Barnaby's pizza.... Well, I decided to head over to the Mishawaka location and get a delicious Barnaby's pizza for the ride back to Chicago. The dogs will be eating SB Barnaby's pizza tonight.

This is for anyone traveling through, I cannot speak for locals. To summarize, I am a pizza lover and can enjoy the most basic of pizzas, the only pizza I won't eat is cici's until now. I would suggest purchasing a personal sized microwave pizza from a gas station and heating up at your hotel over this. Full details below, if you do go here, I wish you a much better experience than we had. Ambiance: quite dark, nostalgic, midwest feel, family friendly, hard wooden benches for seating. Ordering: Walk-up order for food on right and then drinks on left-you'll pay separately at each station and they do take credit cards. They'll call your number when food is ready for you to pick up. Rationed amounts of Parmesan cheese in small cups, none on tables. Price was appropriate for what we ordered, breadsticks, large pizza and 2 drinks for around $22. Service was helpful, not overly friendly. Food: Breadsticks with cheese is not what I would expect from a pizza place. Here it is fried bread with nacho cheese dip. Pizza-basic flavors of cheese, pepperoni, minimal sauce, crust is thin and hard and crunches like it's stale, although I'm not sure how that happens. Ordered a large-could feed 3-4 depending on how much you eat. Ours was half extra cheese, half pepperoni-only found 2 pieces without pepperoni. Women's bathroom: old-although being remodeled, not too dirty, not too clean, water is hot, no drain cover so don't drop a ring and paper towels are auto-although it's hard to tell unless you're 2' tall and can see the sign on the underside of it. Left without finishing for snacks back at the hotel. From my husband: a few things never to be found in a "pizza place" : Awkward ambiance, Nacho cheese, Dust, Stale crust

Best pizza in Michiana area! Delicious crust and sausage. Employees often give discount even if you don't have a coupon. I love the order and serve yourself style. It's a laid back place great for long dinners with friends. Call ahead to order your pizza if you need it quick. Jefferson Road location is SIGNIFIGANTLY better than Grape road location. I'm not sure if they are owned/run by the same people, but the food and service are superior at the Jefferson Road location. The extra drive is worth it.

This is my favorite pizza of all time. The crust has great flavor and is soft and crunchy at the same time. I usually get takeout but the atmosphere inside the restaurant is pretty fun. It's very dark and loud and friendly. They have great specials on beer

Not only is there pizza amazing but their employees are just plain awesome. The customer service is off the chain they really make you feel like family here without even knowing your name. Tara went above and beyond tonight and even though I only spoke to her over the phone I could tell she was smiling and and she was extremely helpful! :) Thank you down town Barnaby's for making our night!

Please invent a yeast-raised thin crust! The toppings and cheese are good. The service is excellent! Wish every time someone in my family doesn't want a pizza from here that they had one for the lower carb group. Their signature crust is so heavy...wonder all the time why it is so popular.

Best damn pizza in South Bend! This isn't one of those trendy Domer joints. This is the real deal. I once took a 20 minute poo in this place. I had to make more room for this awesome pizza. Another cool thing is that you fill out your own order card. I always dig down to ticket number 666 just so I can hear them say "Pizza Number 666, your pizza is ready." Satan would love this place.

Atmosphere and service are exceptional--the people are wonderful! Then we tasted the pizza and forgot all about the atmosphere! The crust was cracker crisp and light, the flavor like none other! A must in south bend --Two Shot Girls! A&R

To whomever said they were writing for travelers, and gave an abysmal review: All time fav pizza... Its Chicago thin crust. Which is similar to St Louis with a cracker crust. Sausage with extra cheese is traditional. Many ppl don't even know Chi thin crust exists. If you thought this was a NY slice, yea, you'd prob be disappointed. But this is where SB eats their pizza. Its amazing. And so is the addictive parm/herb topping. Pizzas are slow to come, arrive boiling, and are worth a wait

If anyone knows of a better pizza in a more unique setting, please let me know the restaurant name and where it is. We love this place for it's environment and awesome pizza. We bring some back to LA whenever we visit. Prices are very fair for the quality of the food. Try it, you will like it!

Living in/around NYC I know good pizza. I mean hell, there's a good pizza place on every block. Barnaby's is good pizza. But not in the Italian fresh ingredients, well balanced pizza kind of way. Like the Pizza Hut all you can eat deep dish buffet kind of way. Make no mistake about it. This is the most American pizza you can get. If you like your crust too thick, with too much cheese, too much meat, and extra cholesterol, you've just found your place. This is the perfect 'drunk' pizza. Or the perfect 'I need to pass out in 20 minutes' pizza. Either way, it's deliciously American.

I love pizza. Deep dish, Brooklyn brick oven, white pizza, gas oven, silician, granny slice, whatever, I love pizza. From New York, and a frequent visitor of Chicago, I can tell you, I know pizza. This place is so sneaky in a good and bad way. They make the slices into bagel bites size, so it's super easy to eat them. The problem? These convenient little suckers make you forget how much you can actually eat. Think of it this way: you'd surprise yourself how many munchkins you can eat in comparison to a donut or two. It is proportionally larger! One bite, two bite, three bite...BAM congrats, you're a fat ass. In terms of the food taste, we got the sausage and mushrooms pie. $17. Meh attitude of the pizza cashier rubbed me the wrong way, but hey, I'm here to meet my friend. The food was okay. The crust was hard, but needed to be so in order that you can eat the piece as a finger food. It wasn't memorable. I can tell you that for sure. I guess this place runs on more for its history and local favorite than anything remarkable. That or New York and Chicago have much more satisfying pizza.

I've been to Barnaby's too many times to count over the years. As far as the pizza goes, I was debating between three and four stars, but the nostalgia gets me so it's four stars. Many locals will tell you there is a difference between the Soouth Bend and Mishawaka Barnaby's locations and they are right - SB is definitely better! I grew up in South Bend and vividly remember walking from St. Joe Grade School to Barnaby's and Howard Park Skating Rink on Friday afternoons. After a chilly evening of skating, the warm, dark environment of Barnaby's was the perfect place to consume too much pizza. The crust is a little unique and thicker than I typically like it. As kids, we always joked the crust tasted a little but like Pepperidge Farm Gold Fish. Barnaby's is dark - no matter what time of day it is. The open dining room is filled with dark wooden booths seating either two or four. No wait service here - you order at the counter and wait for your number to be called (food at one end and drinks at the other). You grab your own plates, silverware and napkins. If you order a salad, you'll get a plate of lettuce and can visit the small salad bar to finish it off. They have a few beers on tap (mugs or pitchers) and serve sodas by the glass or pitcher as well. On our most recent visit, the place was packed and we were told it would be close to an hour for our pizza. No worries - we ordered a couple plates of lettuce and some breadsticks for us and the kids. Salads were fine, nothing fancy and not many toppings to choose from, but that's ok...you don't come for the salad. The breadsticks were deep fried so it was like dipping an unsweetened donut in marinara sauce. Our pizza came out hot and fresh - half pepperoni and half cheese. They put a ton of cheese on the pizza, so much so that we had a had time telling which side had the pepperoni. They cut their pizza into squares so if you like crust, the corners are the best. They tend to go a little overboard on the cheese, but that isn't always a bad thing (might want to ask for light on the cheese though). They always give out a $2 off a large pizza coupon and will give you the discount with or without the coupon...not sure why they don't just lower their price. All and all, a good solid pizza place (Rocco's will always be my #1). Great place for families, sports teams, etc.

    (4)
  • Emily M.

Absolutely, hands down, my favorite pizza in South Bend. It's bar style (thin and cut into squares), cheesy, and delicious. The other food there isn't the awesome, but the fries, breadsitcks, and garlic bread are all great to accompany the pizza. Beer is cheap and they often have a few craft brews on tap. It's a fun place to take large groups. I cannot emphasize enough how great the pizza is here.

I was visiting SB and I was excited to see a Barnabys in town-the pizza of my youth in the northern suburbs of Chicago! Having recently visited the Nilesh Barnabys, I thought I'd compare this location to see if it was the same. It looked exactly the same. Dark, funky. Same bar and ordering system. The pizza, however, was not the same. The sauce is great- spot on. A bit sweet and a bit spicy. The crust, though...despite its massive cornmeal base, was not the thin, crispy crust of a real Barnabys. It had its own charm, to be sure, but no where close to the thin, non-yeasty crust a Barnabys pizza should have. Overall a superior pizza for most places, but not quite to Barnabys standards. I'll try Rocco's next time.

    (3)
  • Leo P.

I grew up on the pizza with pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms and have since tried many other topping combinations. All good! When I crave a pizza or when I was living out of town for a few yeas I always think of Barnaby's first.

    (5)
  • Davoud Z.

I don't know what they sprinkle on their pizzas besides the cornmeal on the crust, but it's addictive, and I'm now an addict. Barnaby's is the best pizza in South Bend. The crust is crunchy, the sausage is super-yummy, the ingredients are fresh, and the sauce is flavorful. I don't know why the one on Grape road isn't as good, but it's worth the few extra miles to go to the original. We were in town visiting and hadn't had Barnaby's in over a year. We quite nearly inhaled the pizza and then shamefully wished for another "hit." So good!

  • Keith H.

Just moved to the area and I am not sure what all the hype is about. Would be a great dive bar, but unfortunately it is a family pizzeria. The crust has the texture and flavor of a saltine cracker. The sauce is like water and the cheese taste like Sam's Choice. I just don't get it.

This place has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. They have a unique crust that you won't find anywhere else, and it is delicious! Very good sauce. Great breadsticks! Fair drink prices. TV's for the game. You can watch them make your pie if you want! I highly recommend!

I grew up on the pizza with pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms and have since tried many other topping combinations. All good! When I crave a pizza or when I was living out of town for a few yeas I always think of Barnaby's first.

Just moved to the area and I am not sure what all the hype is about. Would be a great dive bar, but unfortunately it is a family pizzeria. The crust has the texture and flavor of a saltine cracker. The sauce is like water and the cheese taste like Sam's Choice. I just don't get it.

  • Doug S.

  • George O.

This place has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. They have a unique crust that you won't find anywhere else, and it is delicious! Very good sauce. Great breadsticks! Fair drink prices. TV's for the game. You can watch them make your pie if you want! I highly recommend!
